“I found the perfect house for our next prank” Nico declared enthustiastically when we were hanging out down at the swings in the park. Ever since Ava dragged me along that first time a few months ago I had been hanging out with those boys for several months. It had took me some time to admit they were no idiots but at last I did. Fact was that they were actually quite cool.
Each prank we pulled off gave the same kicking feeling and so far we had never been caught. It had been close a couple of times but in some way we always managed to sneak off unseen.
“Ya, is it old Mr. Carter again” Ava asked with a bored tone. “You always want to take the easy targets. There’s no way Carter could catch you with that cane of his”, she continued and rolled her eyes before going back to making out with Josh. She had kept hanging out with the seniors all this time, with Sonya and Heather still by her side, obeying her every word and as soon as she started high school Josh had given in for the chemistry between them and they had been an unseparable couple ever since.
Ava looked quick at Josh and then back at Nico, “Honestly, I think I’ll pass now. We’ll just hang here today.”
“Ya, maybe you two should try it too sometime?” Josh answered grinning from ear to ear and Nico looked at me and smiled, “Shall we?”
It wasn’t exactly a secret that he had fallen in love with me during these months but unfortunately I didn’t feel the same way about him. It was a nice feeling though, being adored by someone your own age. “Sorry to disappoint you love” I said and smiled, “But what was that house you had in mind?” I continued and started making my leave from the park. Nico followed me like a puppy follows his leader, leaving the two love birds on their own.
“You’ll see” he said and walked passed me, leading the way to that “special” house he had in mind.
We arrived at a street filled with ordinary small houses when he pulled me back behind some trees. “Is this it” I asked a bit disappointed. “How come these houses will be so special?” As we were used to pulling pranks of the richest persons with the most influence I had been quite sure he had found a way to get to the mayor’s house or something. But this was just, quite meh.
When my eyes caught the car that had caught his interest they shut wide-open, “No way!” I couldn’t help myself but to start laughing. “A police officer?! This is a brilliant plan Nico. They will be so jealous if we pull this off!”
As always Nico was the one putting the “mysterious” bag on the porch and ringing the bell while I threw eggs on the front door. Just as usual my heart raced as Nico ran off and it was my turn, this whole thing was really the ultimate kick!
“Ruuuun!” Nico yelled when my eggs splashed against the door. If things had gone accordning to plan I would have turned around, running after him towards safety. Although, this time things didn’t go as usual.
I had just turned around to start running when a familiar figure appeared at the corner of my eye. I just had to look an extra time to make sure if it was who I thought. Just right, out from the house came officer Grasp. The pure sight of him pulled me back in time, back to the confused Ivory I had been just a couple of months ago and I froze at the spot.
“Ivy, run” I heard Nico’s voice in the back of my head but I just couldn’t get myself to make a single move. Officer Grasp looked so sad where he was standing on his porch looking at the mess me and Nico had caused.
Standing completely unprotected just across the street from his house I realized everything had finally caught up with me. The friendship with Josh and Nico had been a perfect way of avoiding the troubling thoughts and facts about my past but now everything washed over me again. I looked straight in to officer Grasp’s eyes and waved towards him, tears starting to run down my cheeks.
I looked around, as if I was searching for the Ivory he was asking for. Nico was nowhere to be seen, so much for friendship, huh? When we finally got caught he just ditched me to take the whole punishment. Of course I was the only Ivory at the scene, I was the one he was asking for but I couldn’t move. I just stood there.
He looked at me, still with sad eyes and started moving towards me. Soon he was standing right next to me and I started crying while preparing myself for a slatering. Instead he surprised me with a friendly, caring tone; “How are you?”
He sighed deep and whispered “I think we need to talk. Come,” before pushing me towards his house. I followed him without fighting. All of my mistakes had finally caught up with me and it was time to deal with them.
